Background

Homeworld

Orthesian was born on the Death World of Mortressa. Quickly learning the tough rules of survival required to reach even puberty on a Death World he showed a natural aptitude for technology from a young age, with an almost instinctive understanding of how and why things worked. Had he been born of a Forge or Hive World chances are he would have been taken by the Adeptus Mechanicus but on Haddrack any edge for survival was more important that such concerns.

Birthright

It was on Mortressa that Orthesian developed his intuition with technology when he was apprenticed to one of the Enginseers that oversaw the salvage and repair of the specialist vehicles that were necessary to survive the Scythewinds. These Hereteks had no formal training and no links to the Priests of Mars and although they worked with and respected the machine spirits around them they were careful not to attract too much attention. It was working here that Orthesian first gained experience with Archeotech whilst working on repairs to an ancient shield general.

Lure of the Void

At the age of 17 Orthesian was 'recruited' into the Imperial Guard tithe from Mortressa and transported to the nearby Forge World of Skorgulian for training and induction. During this stay here he took the opportunities to learn more about technology and gained a reputation for unparalleled weapon maintainence and repair skills. However this reputation also earned him the envy of another recruit - Thale - who learnt of Orthesian's background and intended to out him as a Heretek to the Mechanicus. Hearing of this plot and knowing that it would result in death or worse Orthesian faked cogitator records to show that Thale would implicate him as dealing with a Cold Trade group. The end result that was Thale fled before he could be arrested but took with him evidence of Orthesian's heretek upbringing. Knowing the damage this could still do to him Orthesian set off in pursuit of Thale.

Trials and Travials

Knowing that Thale was headed for the fringes of the Sector Orthesian booked passage on a ship to chase him down. The same ship that Astra was serving on for her first Navigator posting. Orthesian had also taken with him several pieces of Archeotech he had acquired over the year he had spent on Skorgulian. It was whilst on the voyage that he began to experiment with these items and one of them interfered with the Geller Field around the ship which allowed for a warp incursion to take place. During the battle to reclaim the ship from the Warp Orthesian aided the crew in repairing the Geller Field but kept the secret of what caused it to fail initially a secret.

Motivation

Orthesian knows that he cannot return to his old life, the risk that he has been identified as a Heretek also prevents him from returning to Skorgulian or any other settled planet in the sector. As such he has a plan - to become rich enough to either garner the influence and power he needs to be safe from his path, or amass enough wealth to buy his own future in the Koronus Expanse. As such he has been approached through contacts of Astra to join a new Rogue Trader's crew as the Engineseer. Seeing this as the opportunity to start amassing that wealth and also to keep on the trial of Thale he has accepted the position aboard the 'Cleansing Light'.
